IV cannulas color code and their gauges
There are almost 7 IV cannulas which are Orange, Grey, Green, Pink, Blue, Yellow and Violet/Purple. their gauges rang from 26(violet) to 14(Orange).
These cannulas have the following uses
26G is used for the Childs/pediatrics/neonates.
24G is used mostly for neonates or pediatrics blood transfusions and infusion to older adults.
22G is used for routine blood transfusions and most infusion to neonates and older adults.
20G is used for rapid fluid replacement, trauma and most infusions and blood transfusions.
18G is used for rapid transfusions, trauma, rapid blood replacement.
16G is used for rapid transfusions, trauma, rapid blood replacement.
14G is used for rapid transfusions, trauma and surgery.
Mnemonic for colours and gauges
So as shown in the drawing below the gauges of the cannulas is very much easy like from 26G to 14G just minus two from each gauge and you will get the second cannula gauge
for example if we have 20 so minus 2 from it and you will get 18G same for others.
Color codes of cannula
For colours as shown in above title we have simple mnemonic in which we have a best Yemeni(guy from Yemen country) violinist in a great green park.
so the mnemonic for cannula colours is,
On Great Green Park Best Yemeni Violinist.
Note: Although as we go from 26 to 14 the numbers decreases but actually the diameter increases which means the flow will also increases for example the 14 gauge will have high flow as compare to the 26G
